Photographing a Valentine’s Day Proposal at the SF Conservatory of Flowers | from a San Francisco / East Bay Area Proposal Photographer
Some proposals just feel a little extra special, and a Valentine’s Day proposal at the Conservatory of Flowers is definitely one of them.
This one came together fast.
B reached out to me just three days before February 14th because his girlfriend ended up joining him last minute on a work trip out to San Francisco (they’re originally from Colorado). And he was like… yeah, this is the moment.
Normally I don’t work on Valentines’s Day but proposal??!! Those are extra special so I had to say yes and help him make it happen.
Planning a Proposal at the Conservatory of Flowers
If you’ve ever been inside the Conservatory of Flowers, you know it’s beautiful… and also very humid.
Which means: foggy lenses.
The last time I photographed a proposal here, I had about five minutes before the proposal happened and my lenses completely fogged up. Stressful is an understatement. I made it work and constantly wiped by lens but… lesson learned!!!
So this time, I came prepared.
I gave myself about 15 minutes inside for my gear to adjust and (not gonna lie) slightly warmed up my lenses in my car beforehand to help with the transition. A little extra? Maybe. Worth it? Absolutely haha.
Walking Through the Plan
When you book a proposal with me, part of what you’re getting is help planning the whole thing, not just showing up and taking photos.
B and I walked through:
The best spots inside the conservatory
How to time everything so it felt natural
Where I’d be positioned
And how to make sure we captured the moment from multiple angles
For this proposal, we chose the potted plants room, specifically in front of the large central plant (if you know, you know). It’s such a good, clean backdrop and gives you space to actually see the moment.

Blending In (Successfully)
The best part?
She had no idea.
I was casually milling around inside like I was just there with my husband taking photos for fun (which is honestly a very believable cover for me haha. We do that a lot.)
So even though she definitely saw me, it didn’t raise any red flags at all. It helped that there were other people photographing inside the conservatory for fun.
Exactly what I hoped.
The Moment (aka Me Trying to Act Calm)
Right before B got down on one knee, my heart was beating so fast.
Like it isn’t my proposal so you would think I wouldn’t be nervous, but also, I take my job very seriously. Proposals are once in a lifetime moments so I am very careful in making sure I capture the moment correctly.
I was also filming on my DJI Osmo because I love behind-the-scenes videos, and you can literally hear my breathing get heavier in the footage because I’m trying to stay calm and not miss anything. It’s honestly kind of funny. Take a look at a reel I made of that here haha.
But everything went perfectly. He got down on one knee, and she said yes 🥲 They kissed, he twirled her around, no exaggeration… it was magical. And I definitely got choked up and teared up a little. What can I say?! I LOVE LOVE!
After the Proposal
Afterward, we spent some time taking photos inside the conservatory.
She wore a black dress, which was actually such a good choice. It didn’t clash with any of the greenery and kept everything looking really clean and elevated in photos.
Then we stepped outside into Golden Gate Park where it was cloudy.
The light was super soft, really even, and just so good for portraits. No harsh shadows, no squinting, just that nice, natural glow.
Why the Conservatory of Flowers Is Such a Good Proposal Spot
If you’re thinking about proposing in San Francisco, this is easily one of my favorite locations.
It feels intentional and unique
You get indoor + outdoor options
It works in any weather
It photographs beautifully without needing a big setup
Just… give your photographer time for their lenses to adjust. Please. Learn from my past mistakes.
A Quick Note
Proposals like this are always such a mix of planning and adrenaline.
Everything is timed, everything is intentional… and then suddenly it’s happening and I’m over here trying to breathe normally and not miss a single second.
Wouldn’t trade it for anything though.
One of my favorite photos of the entire gallery!
Planning Your Own Proposal?
If you’re thinking about proposing in the Bay Area, whether it’s at the Conservatory of Flowers or somewhere else in the Bay Area or beyond, I’d love to help you plan it and photograph it!
I’ll walk you through location options, timing, logistics, and make sure everything runs smoothly so you can actually be present in the moment.
I can also sometimes offer a second shooter so you get multiple angles of the proposal (which I highly recommend if you want the full story captured).
There are so many incredible places to propose in the Bay Area; this is just one of them.
Let’s make it happen.
