Where to go for Timeless & Romantic Engagement Photos that Feel like Date Night - a Downtown Pleasanton, CA Engagement Session at Rubys & Roses from an East Bay Area Engagement Photographer

Where should you go for classic and timeless engagement photos in the Bay Area that aren’t outdoors or in nature?

Rubys and Roses in Pleasanton, California is without a doubt one of my top recommendations for timeless engagement photos if you are looking for an indoor bar vibe or downtown session and you are not a super outdoorsy-focused couple. As you take a little read into this blog and view photos from the session, I bet you will agree with me. Pleasanton’s downtown in combination with nostalgic and yet romantic velvet high top bar seats at Rubys and Roses will hit just the mark for you.

About the session

I have officially decided that date-night engagement sessions need to happen more often. Because not every couple wants to hike a mountain at sunrise or stand in a field for an hour for engagement photos and that is 100% okay.

Some couples want cocktails, a fun atmosphere, and an excuse to get dressed up. It’s your engagement session so let’s get you what you want!

This Downtown Pleasanton engagement session with Taylor and Joe was exactly that. Their session was romantic, playful, elevated, and had just the right amount of nostalgia mixed in.

Also, can we talk about their style for a second? Taylor wore the most beautiful fitted short white dress with elegant lace sleeves, and Joe wore a black suit with a white dress shirt. Truly impeccable styling from both of them. Taylor was originally choosing between a short dress and a long one and it was my personal recommendation to go short to not only fit the vibe more, but also give some flexibility for some of the sitting poses I had in mind for the session.

Together, they looked AMAZING!

A Sweet Story Behind Their Engagement Session

This session actually started with Taylor's dad. He found me through Google and purchased an engagement session as a gift for them, which I thought was the sweetest idea ever. I even designed a custom coupon for him to gift to Taylor and Joe as their engagement present. It was out of the box and I’d never done it before but really liked the idea! (If you’re interested in this for yourself, let me know and I am more than happy to include a hand-designed coupon for your session!)

I absolutely love when family members find thoughtful ways to celebrate their people, and this felt so intentional.

Also, huge shoutout to Taylor's dad for helping my Google SEO efforts 😂.

Why Downtown Pleasanton Is Such A Good Spot For Engagement Photos

I feel like Downtown Pleasanton gets overlooked sometimes when people are planning engagement sessions in the Bay Area.

Everyone immediately thinks San Francisco or somewhere out in nature. But Downtown Pleasanton is such a good option, especially if you're looking for something elevated without having to drive into the city.

A few reasons I love it:

  • It's extremely walkable.

  • There are tons of little pockets for photos.

  • There are cute crosswalks, brick hallways, and charming storefronts.

  • Parking is easy.

  • It feels safe at night.

  • It gives date-night vibes without needing a huge production.

Honestly, it's perfect for couples who want a more urban engagement session without dealing with San Francisco crowds or safety concerns.

We started the session near a brick hallway and staircase that immediately gave us a more editorial feel before making our way toward Rubys & Roses.

Why Rubys & Roses Is Such A Fun Engagement Session Location

Okay, now for one of the best parts of this session: Rubys & Roses. The vibes here are SO good, and if you haven’t been to the restaurant or heard of it, you’ve got to look it up (here’s their website!). I actually was introduced to them when Taylor suggested the restaurant for the session!

It somehow feels vintage, modern, elegant, and a little speakeasy-ish all at the same time.

Green velvet chairs. Roses everywhere. A gorgeous bar wall. Long white hanging flowers out front. Dark and moody corners. Great cocktails.

It basically feels like it was designed for an engagement session. The giant double R made of roses outside was also a really fun touch because… engagement photos + roses = of course a yes.

The manager and staff were also INCREDIBLE to work with and I don’t say that lightly.

We intentionally scheduled this session for a weeknight near closing time so we wouldn't disrupt guests or have flash photography going off around a packed restaurant.

Everyone was so accommodating and made the entire experience feel easy and enjoyable.

Why Flash Photography Is So Fun For Engagement Sessions

I have become such a fan of flash photography lately all because of this session to be honest. It creates an elevated, nostalgic look while still feeling playful and authentic.

I also edited these photos with subtle green tones in the shadows to emulate film while fully embracing those deep blacks that flash photography creates. It's romantic, a little editorial, and honestly just really cool.

If you're someone who likes vintage aesthetics but still wants your photos to feel fresh and modern, this style might be for you!!

What poses or photos should be on your shot list for your own engagement session?

I have so many favorite moments from the session that turned into a future shot list for me for sure.

  • Taylor sitting on the bar countertop while Joe looked at her.

  • The two of them sitting at the bar with cocktails in hand.

  • Walking through downtown.

  • Joe putting his coat on Taylor to keep her warm at the end of the session

  • Crossing the street with flash.

  • Photos in front of the long white hanging flowers.

And honestly, just watching how comfortable they were together made it so much more fun. You could tell they genuinely enjoyed being around each other, which always makes my job easier.

Timing Matters

We started this session a little after 8:30 PM, right after sunset.

This timing ended up being perfect. By the end of the session, around 10 PM, Downtown Pleasanton had gotten much quieter, which allowed us to get photos in the streets without a huge audience around us or us getting in the way of cars. This is actually something I think about a lot when planning sessions. The right timing can completely change your experience. It can help avoid crowds, create a more relaxed atmosphere, and make the photos feel more intimate.

Who Is This Type Of Session Perfect For?

This type of engagement session is perfect if:

  • You're not super outdoorsy.

  • You want an elevated date-night vibe.

  • You love cocktails (or mocktails).

  • You want a mix of candid and editorial photos.

  • You don't want to pay for tickets somewhere.

  • You want something unique without driving all over the Bay Area.

  • You love nostalgia with a modern twist.

Basically, if your ideal date night sounds more like "let's grab drinks and wander around town" than "let's hike a mountain," this will be right up your alley.

The Overall Vibe

This gallery felt:

  • Romantic.

  • Playful.

  • Stylish.

  • Nostalgic.

  • Editorial.

  • A little speakeasy-ish.

And honestly, just really effortless. My favorite sessions are the ones that feel elevated while still feeling like you. That is always the goal alongside also trying to make the experience fun, not nervewracking, and easy for you!

Adding an extra special touch!

My last fun note? We passed by the couples favorite restauraunt at the end of the session - Andy & Yu’s at the end of the session so we HAD to get a photo of them in front of the restauraunt to add an extra special touch to the gallery!
