Why You Should Have an Elopement at the Hayward Japanese Gardens
A few weeks ago, I had the sweet privilege of photographing a small elopement at one of my favorite Bay Area hidden gems: the Hayward Japanese Gardens. Sometimes the most intimate, peaceful spaces tell the most beautiful stories. What truly matters the most when planning your own wedding or elopement (I speak from experience as a 2024 bride) is finding a place that reflects YOU and what YOU envision for your special day.
Why the Hayward Japanese Gardens truly sparkle for elopements
This garden is that soft, serene backdrop you didn’t know you were craving. Every little detail—the koi pond, the pagoda, and all the greenery—it’s a soothing, artful embrace in the middle of Hayward that’s quiet, still, and full of soul.
An elopement here feels poetic and personal. There’s no rush. It’s peaceful. It’s small and romantic.
The logistics—they’re easier than you might think
Hours & access:
The garden is open to visitors daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., only closed on Christmas Day. Even though public visiting wraps by 4:00 p.m., you can rent the space for ceremonies right after hours, from about 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., during April through August.
Costs to reserve:
Here’s what you’ll want to know:
Refundable deposit: $500
Rental fee (3-hour minimum): $600 for residents / $750 for non-residents
Additional hours: $200 for residents / $250 for non-residents
Special event insurance (required for all rentals): $500
How to book:
You submit the “Request for Rental of HARD facility” form via email to reservations@haywardrec.org—or in person at the Hayward Area Recreation & Park District Administrative Office—and must do so at least 30 days but no more than 11 months in advance.

Timing matters—let’s talk light
Golden hour in the Bay Area is a photographer’s delight. Scheduling your ceremony to begin will slightly depend on which end of April or August you have the elopement, as sunset time will change. I would recommend talking to your photographer or planner about that timing for when you want your ceremony to make sure you get that soft, flattering light cascading through the trees and across the koi pond—without rush or distractions. The light then gently fades as the sun dips lower, offering a graceful, cinematic mood that’s full of quiet emotion.
Privacy note
Out of respect for my clients’ wishes, I’m sharing only photos from the gallery without faces in this blog—to honor their privacy while still giving you a glimpse of the atmosphere, details, and mood of this tender, intimate ceremony.
Final thoughts
If small, meaningful, intentional, and beautifully minimal is your vibe, an elopement at the Hayward Japanese Gardens is a great choice. It’s also truthfully a great way to save money if you have a lower budget for your elopement/wedding or want to spend more on your honeymoon! It’s quietly gorgeous, surprisingly easy to book, and perfect for couples who want their love to shine in a peaceful, soulful space.
If you’re dreaming of your own elopement at the Japanese Gardens (or anywhere else in the Bay Area), I’d love to be part of it. Reach out here and let’s start planning the photos that will tell your story. Follow me on Instagram to see more of my recent photography sessions here!
