Planning the Perfect Proposal at Carmel Beach: A Love Story Years in the Making + Gallery Peaks
There’s something incredibly magical about photographing a proposal—especially when it takes place along the golden shores of Carmel Beach. The sea air, the sound of waves, and the sweeping views of the Pacific create a TIMELESS backdrop for one of the most magical moments of someone’s life.
I had the honor of capturing this proposal for a couple I photographed several years ago for a couples shoot in the early days of my business. I wanted to start photographing couples more, so J + H allowed me to photograph their sweet love! Fast forward to today, two years later, and we came full circle when J hired me to help him decide on the perfect proposal in Carmel Beach and photograph it.
The Planning: Timing, Light & Surprise
It all started with an email 6 months ahead of when J was thinking of proposing. The groom-to-be (we’ll call him J for short) wanted to propose to his partner, H, and while he didn’t have the location totally nailed down, he knew he wanted it to be somewhere in Carmel. I can’t blame him; what could anyone not love about the stunning, romantic vibe of Carmel Beach and Carmel-by-the-Sea!!!! I am a beach girlie myself though so I am definitely biased haha.
From our first conversation, we knew that golden hour was non-negotiable. Crowds thin out towards the evening at Carmel Beach, leaving some stragglers that are staying for sunset, while the light turns warm and buttery, and romantic shadows from coastal succulents and cliffs start to come to life.
Where on the beach the proposal would happen was determined when several months earlier, my husband and I actually took a day trip to Carmel and while there, scouted several vantage points to find the best, most private location. I sent J some test shots with my advice on the location to avoid people and get a great photo, and he chose from there!
J and I coordinated everything over several calls and emails —down to how he would get H to be in Carmel without him, when she would get to the beach, and what reason would draw her there, prepped in a cute outfit with makeup and nails (since he knew she would want that for proposal photos). I arrived early with my husband who acted as a second shooter so that we could snag the perfect spot J and I planned, and then my husband and I prepared our positions for when J would meet H at the parking lot to walk her over to the designated spot.
J and H already had ring shopped, so that portion of planning was already done and secured!
The Moment: Authentic, Emotional, Unforgettable
I honestly have to say, my heart was absolutely BUMPING when the moment came!!!! I take a lot of care to help clients plan for these moments to make sure it is as smooth as possible, and I was also just so excited for what was about to happen. J went to the parking lot to meet H where her friend dropped her off, and they started the short 2 minute walk to the spot.
When they reached the little hill, J quickly dropped to one knee and asked H to marry him. Her reaction was truly so sweet—a big smile, her hand ready for him to put the ring on (it was an absolute yes from her), and SUCH a precious kiss!!
Because we had planned a hidden spot, my husband and I were able to stay hidden until after the proposal stopped and capture every second without intruding—just the two of them, fully immersed in the moment.
The moment after, J pointed to where my husband and I were photographing and Heather laughed once she saw us. From there, we headed down to the water for a 30 minute engagement session. The cliffs, driftwood, birds, waves, and soft dunes gave us a range of textures and tones to work with, all reflecting the couple’s easygoing, affectionate energy.
Why Carmel Beach?
Carmel Beach offers more than just beauty—it offers intimacy. If you pick the right time and place, it feels personal and romantic. Whether you're tucked into the dunes or standing at the surf’s edge, it’s easy to feel like you’re the only two people in the world.
For anyone planning a proposal here, my advice is simple:
Plan ahead, but be ready for spontaneity. Weather can change quickly along the coast.
Choose evenings for fewer crowds and softer light.
Involve your photographer early—we can help with logistics, location recommendations, and timing.
Make it personal. Incorporate a favorite memory, walk, or inside joke that reflects your relationship!
Looking Back, Looking Forward
I don’t know if there will ever be a time that I go to Carmel Beach and don’t think about photographing J and H’s proposal. I know it is cheesy, but there is something so incredibly magical about getting to be involved in such a pivotal moment for two people in this world.
If you’re thinking about proposing on the coast, I’d love to help you plan it. Let’s create something beautiful together and capture one of the most important moments and decisions of your life!! Connect with me here!
