Lafayette Reservoir Proposal Guide | Planning a Meaningful Surprise Engagement in the East Bay

Over the years, I've learned that the most memorable proposals aren't necessarily the most elaborate. They're the ones that feel personal. They're planned with intention, take place somewhere meaningful, and allow the couple to be fully present in the moment.
That's exactly what Kyle envisioned.
A few months before he proposed, he reached out to me because he wanted help planning a surprise proposal that felt authentic to their relationship and a photographer to capture it. By the time the day arrived, every detail had been thoughtfully considered, from choosing the dock with the best lighting to making sure the proposal still felt intimate despite taking place in a public area.
It was one of my favorite proposals I've photographed, and I hope sharing their story also helps anyone planning their own proposal in the Bay Area.
How Kyle Found Me
One of my favorite parts of this story is actually how Kyle found me.
He was referred to me by Brett Mortenson of B. Allan Jewelers, a family friend of his. As soon as Kyle mentioned Brett's name in his inquiry form, I immediately smiled because my husband and I actually purchased both my engagement ring and our wedding bands from Brett as well. Why Lafayette Reservoir Was the Perfect Place to Propose
There are plenty of beautiful places to propose around the Bay Area, but the best proposal locations aren't always the most dramatic or well known.
Sometimes they're simply the places that already feel like home.
Kyle spent time at Lafayette Reservoir growing up, so choosing it wasn't really about finding a scenic backdrop. It was about choosing a place that had already been part of his life for years.
Of course, I also happen to love it as well haha. Between the peaceful lake, hills (green in winter and golden in summer), walking paths, and quiet docks tucked into the shoreline, it offers so many beautiful places for an intimate proposal.
The dock we ultimately chose was surrounded by tall green reeds, creating a natural frame around the two of them. It almost felt like they had their own private corner of the reservoir, even though it is a public park.
Why Planning Ahead Makes Such a Difference
One thing I always tell clients is that it's never too early to reach out.
Kyle contacted me a couple of months before the proposal, which gave us plenty of time to plan everything together instead of trying to figure things out a few days beforehand.
Originally, we were planning for an entirely different proposal location elsewhere in the Bay Area. As we continued talking through ideas though and Kyle visited the Bay (he lives on the other side of the country!!), it became clear that Lafayette Reservoir felt much more meaningful.
Once we settled on the location, we discussed several different docks, the direction of the sun, the time of day, privacy, and how everything would flow once they arrived.
Most people think hiring a proposal photographer simply means someone shows up with a camera. In reality, a huge part of my job happens long before proposal day, and it’s actually why I price a proposal higher than just an engagement session. Together we create a plan so that when the moment finally arrives, you don't have to think about anything except asking that one life-changing question!!!! A Few Last-Minute Surprises
Even with months of planning, proposal days always seem to have a few unexpected moments.
Kyle's brother arrived early with a broom so he could sweep the dock clean before they arrived. ICONIC. He even helped move a large table/bench on the dock so the proposal space would feel open and uncluttered.
Meanwhile, Karie's sister had also secretly flown in and joined so she could surprise her afterward.
Then came one of my favorite stories from the day.
Before Kyle shuffled into place
Just minutes before Kyle and Karie arrived, I realized there was one thing I wish I could do: remind Kyle about standing in the very middle of the dock. The proposal spot was beautiful, but because the reeds were SO tall and encroached on the dock so much, it meant that if Kyle and Karie weren’t directly in the center, bits of them would be blocked by reeds.
We quickly came up with what we thought was a brilliant solution haha. His brother texted him saying he’d found a restaurant for later called "Center of the Dock." Kyle never saw the text but thankfully, a couple minutes into the proposal he instinctively shuffled right to the perfect spot anyway.
About five minutes before the proposal, two people paddled their boat toward the dock. I walked over, explained that a proposal was about to happen, and asked if they'd mind moving for just a few minutes. They couldn't have been kinder and happily rowed somewhere that would stay out of the background.
It's little acts of kindness like that which make these moments even more memorable (and also makes my job easier haha).
The Proposal
One thing Kyle mentioned during our planning calls was that he hoped Karie wouldn't realize I was there until after he proposed. He wanted the moment to feel like it was just the two of them. I respect it.
That meant a little improvisation on my part. I had two plans going into the proposal:
Try and find a tree or bush that I could hide behind.
Dress like a hiker in case I needed to be visible.
Once I got there, I saw that plan A absolutely would not work, so I had to swap to plan B, but I also couldn’t be visible with my camera during the proposal AND I needed to know Kyle and Karie had arrived. The surprise worked perfectly. Karie was completely shocked when I was eventually visible and introduced myself.
After saying yes, the two of them simply stood together on the dock, laughing, hugging, crying, and taking in the reality that they were engaged.
Those quiet moments immediately afterward are always my favorite.
My Favorite Photograph
If I had to choose one favorite image from this entire gallery, it wouldn't actually be the photograph of Kyle down on one knee. It would be the moment afterward when Karie reached up to gently wipe away Kyle's tears.
I tear up every time I look at it and I promise that’s not an exaggeration.
That photograph captures something much deeper than the proposal itself. It shows the care they have for one another and the overwhelming emotion of finally reaching this milestone together and choosing to spend the rest of their lives together.
As photographers, we're often expected to chase the "big moment." Personally, I think the moments immediately afterward often tell the richer story.
Celebrating Around Lafayette Reservoir
After taking a few minutes for themselves on the dock, we spent some time exploring the reservoir together for engagement portraits.
We photographed along the water, stayed on the dock for a mix of scenic images and close-up moments, captured ring shots, and then headed over to one of the nearby grassy fields where they could simply enjoy being newly engaged while I snapped some last shots.
Some of my favorite images from this part of the session are the playful ones. The hugs, the laughter, the spinning around in the grass, and all the excitement that comes after the nerves have disappeared.
It was the perfect ending to a really meaningful morning.

Reach out to a photographer early (fingers crossed it’s me hehe). It's never too early to start planning, and having extra time means we can thoughtfully choose the best location, lighting, and timing together.
If possible, consider a weekday evening when the reservoir is typically quieter.
Think about what makes the location meaningful to your relationship. Beautiful scenery is wonderful, but sentimental places often make the most memorable proposals.
